Location and classification
The Hügelheim Castle Garden is located in the Hügelheim district of Müllheim in the Markgräflerland region of Baden. The wine-growing area lies south of Hügelheim towards Müllheim. The vineyard site Schloßgarten within the Hügelheim cadastral area is assigned to the Großlage Burg Neuenfels.
Climate, orientation and soils
The sheltered and warm site is characterised by a particularly mild climate, influenced by warm winds flowing in through the Burgundian Gate. The Schloßgarten is described as a hillside site oriented to the south-west and west. The soils around the Hügelheim vineyards consist mainly of loess and loess loam.
Grape varieties and wine style
For the site, Gutedel and Weißburgunder are documented as suitable grape varieties. Gutedel is regarded as a main grape variety of the Hügelheim Castle Garden; Weißburgunder is also grown there. In addition, a wine with the designation Hügelheimer Schlossgarten Merlot is documented. A described vintage from 2016 of the Hügelheim Castle Garden Gutedel was a dry quality wine with a lightly elegant profile and was matured in stainless steel tanks as well as ripened reductively.
Historical reference and cultivation
The plot name Schloßgarten is linked historically to a former Hügelheim manor estate. A document from 1587 describes the castle with surrounding moat and associated agricultural buildings. Among the documented cultivation measures of local producers are yield regulation and environmentally conscious plant protection, including the biological control of animal pests.
