Schloßberg-Schwätzerchen

Location and area size

Schloßberg-Schwätzerchen is a single vineyard site in the Bingen section of the winegrowing region of Rheinhessen and belongs to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle. The legally registered wine-growing site extends across the cadastral areas of Bingen, Büdesheim and Kempten in the city of Bingen am Rhein.

Soils and topography

The official site profile describes the soil as calcareous, deep and loamy Löss-Pararendzina with high water-holding capacity. A documented parcel is located on the south-facing slope of the Rochusberg with around 50 percent gradient. In another parcel, the wine is planted on quartzite of Devonian origin; it is described as shallow-rooting, decalcified and low in nutrients.

Grape varieties and wine style

For this site, Riesling and Silvaner have been documented. The Löss-Pararendzina expression is associated with notes of yellow fruit and citrus, moderate acidity and a medium body. Riesling from the quartzite parcel is described as long-lived and complex, with pronounced acidity and fine minerality.

Name and registration

The name is documented in 1471 in the form “am schwetzgin”. The current designation also refers to “im Schloßberg”, documented in 1781, and to the Bingen festival figure Schwätzerchen. In the official wine-growing sites register, Schloßberg-Schwätzerchen bears wine site number 710611; for 2024, 19.5 hectares in Bingen, 26.8 hectares in Büdesheim and 23.5 hectares in Kempten are registered.
