Location and classification
Schloßberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the Ortenau area of the Qualitätsweinregion Baden. The Oberkircher Schloßberg described here lies on the vineyard sites below the Schauenburg in Oberkirch.
Climate and soils
The Oberkirch wine-growing area has around 1,750 hours of sunshine and 800 to 1,000 millimetres of rainfall per year. The mild climate is influenced by the Rhine Valley and the foothills of the Black Forest. The mineral-rich soils are shaped by weathered granite.
Vineyard sites and cultivation
The Oberkircher Schloßberg comprises steep slopes facing south below the Schauenburg. Farming involves a selective choice of grapes; hand work and manual harvesting are also documented. Grown among other varieties are Spätburgunder, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau and Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine styles and ageing
Documented are dry Rieslings, Spätburgunder, Chardonnays and Grauburgunder, as well as Spätburgunder Weißherbst and sweet or delicately off-dry wine styles. Riesling is described as fruit-led, with ripe, well-balanced acidity. A Chardonnay from the Oberkircher Schloßberg was clarified after pressing and fermented in a stainless-steel tank, while a Spätburgunder matured in wood or in barriques.
