Location and Classification
The Niederkirchener Schloßberg is located in Niederkirchen near Deidesheim in the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area of the wine-growing region Pfalz. It is registered as a single-vineyard site and belongs to the Großlage Deidesheimer Hofstück.
Soils
Documented are strong loam and loess with a high proportion of red sandstone (Buntsandstein). A wine from the site is also assigned to deep to medium-deep clayey-sandy soils.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Saint Laurent, Riesling and Dornfelder are recorded from the Niederkirchener Schloßberg. Site-specific wines include dry red wines made from Saint Laurent and Dornfelder. A Riesling that comes mostly from the site is described with loess-influenced fruit and acidity.
Vinification
Saint Laurent is hand-harvested, traditionally fermented with whole berries on the skins, matured for 20 months in new and used barriques, and bottled unfiltered. For a Riesling, spontaneous fermentation as well as ageing in stainless steel and wood are documented.
