Niederkirchen

Location and viticulture

Niederkirchen is a wine-growing municipality on the Haardt edge in the winegrowing region Pfalz. The vineyard area within the municipal territory covers around 120 hectares. Niederkirchen is located at the transition between the Haardt edge and the Rhine plain; from there, the view extends over the Rhine plain.

Soils and climate

The soils are mostly loamy and sandy. For the winegrowing region Pfalz, a mean annual temperature of about 10 °C, a mean temperature during the growing season of about 14.7 °C and an average annual rainfall of around 655 millimetres are given.

Grape varieties and vineyard sites

Riesling is the most widely grown grape variety in Niederkirchen. As vineyard names, Klostergarten and Schloßberg are documented. A documented Klostergarten Riesling from Niederkirchen of the 2024 vintage is a semi-dry white German Qualitätswein Pfalz with 12.0% alcohol, 14.5 g/l residual sugar and 7.4 g/l acidity.

History and cellar work

Niederkirchen was first mentioned in 699 under the name Didinisheim. From about 1360, the place was called Niederdeidesheim; in 1818 it was officially independent and in 1828 the name Niederkirchen was made official. From the end of the 11th century until 1794, Niederkirchen belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer. The Weingut Scheuermann describes an extended lees ageing of its wines in wood as well as a restrained intervention in the cellar, where naturally active yeasts and bacteria take over the work.
