Schloßberg

Location and Classification

The Schloßberg refers to the Achkarren Schlossberg in Achkarren in the wine-growing region Baden. The site is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and covers 111 hectares. Producers from Ihringen are also associated with it.

Climate and Terroir

The site is considered exceptionally warm. Its basin-like topography intensifies the warmth; the wider Ihringen-Kaiserstuhl area has a high average annual temperature and long sunshine duration, and is protected from rainfall by the Vosges.

The vineyards, oriented from west to south-east, are located at around 200 to 310 metres above sea level and have a slope of 20 to 60 percent. The soil consists of vulcanite, or of stony volcanic weathering material.

Cultivation and Grape Varieties

The steep slope includes large terraces and requires cultivation under difficult steep-slope conditions. In vineyard management, cover crops and organic fertiliser are used, also to preserve the ecosystem.

As classified grape varieties, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay are listed.

History and Wines

The name refers to a former stately building. In the vineyard area, the ruins of the Höhingen Castle, built in the 13th century, have been preserved. In 1819, rocks were blown up below the ruins in order to create vineyard sites.

White wines from Riesling, Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder, as well as red wines from Spätburgunder, are documented. The site wines are also described as mineral.
