Location and Topography
The Schloßberg is the Diersburg castle hill in the Diersburg district of Hohberg in Baden. The steep, south-facing slopes reach a gradient of up to 50 percent and lie directly above the former Diersburg castle ruins.
Soil and Viticulture
Weathered hard-rock soils with low fertility shape the site. The steep terrain requires extensive manual work, while the low soil fertility naturally limits yields. Hohberg is described as a warm viticultural site.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Riesling and Spätburgunder are the most important documented grape varieties. The low yields are associated with concentrated aromas; the wines are described as mineral and elegant.
History and Maturation
The castle associated with the vineyard was first mentioned in 1197 as “Stein zu Tiersperg”. The range of offerings includes a Diersburg castle hill Spätburgunder Spätlese trocken matured in a small wooden cask, as well as the sparkling wines Diersburg castle hill Pinot brut and Riesling brut. The sparkling wine is produced in the winery from selected steep-slope wines and is hand riddled using the traditional Champagne method.
