Location and classification
The Neuweierer Schloßberg is located in Baden-Baden-Neuweier in the Baden wine-growing region. The south-facing site lies immediately behind Neuweier Castle and rises to around 200 metres above the castle. With a slope gradient of approximately 55 percent, it is cultivated as a steep vineyard site.
Soils and climate
The documented parent material comprises weathering products of granite and arkosic sandstone, as well as mica-rich slate. In addition, quartz porphyry appears at the surface, which is associated with the nearby former volcano Yburg. During the day, warm slope winds blow in from the Rhine valley; in the evening, cooling down-draught winds from the Black Forest cool the site. The winery describes these air movements as supportive of grape ripening and the retention of acidity.
Cultivation and grape variety
The Schloßberg is a monopoly in the sole ownership of the Schloss Neuweier winery. The winery states that it covers roughly three hectares, while the VDP manages 2.76 hectares of classified vineyard area. The site is planted exclusively with Riesling and is farmed without any artificial irrigation documented on the vineyard side.
Classification and wine style
The Neuweierer Schloßberg is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. The wines are described as mineral Rieslings with a diverse range of fruit aromas. The vineyards of Schloss Neuweier, including Schloßberg and Mauerberg, have been documented as being cultivated since the 12th century.
