Schloßberg

Location

The Schloßberg is a wine-growing site in Bad Kreuznach in the Nahe. Locally, the site is also documented under the name “Aufm Schlossberg”. It lies on the Kauzenberg above the Nahe and below the Kauzenburg.

Terroir and Viticulture

The documented parcel slopes steeply down towards the Nahe and is terraced. Its soils consist of yellow and red sandstone with gravel. Below the Kauzenburg there are terrace parcels; in addition, dry-stone walls used in viticulture have been documented at the site.

Grape Variety and Wine

For the parcel Aufm Schlossberg, Riesling is documented. The dry Riesling from this site shows a silky, structured mouthfeel, pronounced acidity, mineral and saline notes, as well as characteristics of yellow fruit.

Historical Classification and Production

Historical sources from the 19th century described the Schloßberg, or Kauzenberg, as one of the leading wine-growing sites of Kreuznach. For the documented Riesling, the grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed and left on the skins for four hours. Spontaneous fermentation took place in a stainless-steel tank; the wine then matured for ten months on fine lees, was roughly filtered and further developed in the bottle.
