Location and Classification
The Schlossberg is a vineyard site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Hecklingen in the growing region Baden. The classified area covers 5.55 hectares. The site is oriented from west to south-west and lies at approximately 200 to 280 metres above sea level.
Soils and Grape Varieties
Chardonnay and Spätburgunder grow on extremely steep, south-west-facing slopes with a gradient of about 50 to 60 percent. The soils consist of skeletal, weathered shell limestone and appear whitish to yellowish. The steep site requires manual work in the vineyard.
History and Cultivation
Winegrowing on the Hecklingen Schlossberg has been documented since 1492 according to scientific findings. The site is associated with the ruins of Lichteneck Castle, which lie above the vineyard. As a VDP winemaker who works in the Schlossberg in Hecklingen, Bernhard Huber is credited.
