Location and landscape
Hecklingen is a wine-growing village in Breisgau in Baden and belongs to the district of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg. The village lies in a steep-walled valley that opens to the west towards the Elz lowlands, below Lichteneck Castle. Hecklingen is assigned to the wine-growing region Baden.
Vineyard Schlossberg
The Schlossberg faces west to south-west and is located at about 200 to 280 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is 80 to 90 per cent; the cultivation of this steep vineyard is therefore carried out by hand. The classified area covers 5.55 hectares.
The skeletal-rich soil was formed from whitish to yellowish weathered Muschelkalk. This geological occurrence is considered unusual for the foothill zone of the Black Forest. For the classified site, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder are recorded. Documented wines from the Hecklingen Schlossberg include dry Spätburgunder, including VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. The VDP lists the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Baden.
History
Wine-growing in the Schlossberg area has been documented since 1492. The vineyard site is connected with the ruins of Lichteneck, which were built in the 13th century by the Counts of Freiburg and were destroyed in 1675 during the Dutch War by French troops.
