Location and orientation
Schellenbrunnen lies directly above the wine village of Tiefenbach, a district of Östringen in the wine-growing region of Baden. The vineyard site is on a projecting part of a wooded ridge with a south-facing orientation. It lies at an altitude of 200 to 240 metres above sea level and has a slope of 20 to 50 per cent.
Climate and soils
The exposed, wind-exposed position promotes aeration. On sunny days, there is a comparatively rapid cooling at night. The soil profile is described as alternating limestone marl and Stubensandstein; within the vineyard site, red limestone with a turquoise-coloured stratum also occurs.
Classification and grape variety
The VDP lists Schellenbrunnen in the Baden growing area as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The classified area covers 5.39 hectares. The grape variety is Riesling; Heitlinger is the listed VDP producer for this site.
Name and wine
The name Schellenbrunnen is linked to a spring in the vineyard site, around which bellflowers grow. The documented Schellenbrunnen Riesling by Heitlinger is dry and classified as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®. For the 2016 vintage, the grapes were pressed in whole at the winery, left on the mash for four hours, gently pneumatic-pressed, fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, and matured for twelve months on the full lees.
