Location and Climate
Scharrenberg is a vineyard site in Stuttgart-Degerloch in the Württemberg wine-growing region of Germany. The registered vineyard area comprises around 3.5 hectares. The vineyards are located at about 360 to 420 metres above sea level and are predominantly oriented south to south-west. The area has a comparatively warm and well-balanced wine-growing climate.
Relief and Soils
Many plots have slope gradients of up to around 60 degrees and are considered steep sites. In the upper areas, predominantly Stubensandstone from the Middle Keuper is present, which corresponds to the Löwenstein Formation. The lower vineyard areas lie on upper and lower variegated marl, separated by a narrow band of siliceous sandstone.
Terraces and History
Many vineyard plots are terraced with dry-stone walls. Along the Schimmelhüttenweg, individual walls reach a height of around four metres. In the affected plots, the terraces prevent the use of vineyard machinery, so the vineyards and vines are cultivated by hand. Winegrowing around Degerloch and along the Schimmelhüttenweg has been documented since the middle of the 15th century. Terraces, retaining walls, steps and paving along the Schimmelhüttenweg are protected as a historical ensemble.
Varieties and Single Site
Historically, Trollinger was the predominant grape variety; a Stuttgart vineyard register from 2015 listed it on approximately two thirds of the planted area. Today, Lemberger, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot are also documented. Trollinger is the traditional main wine style of the site, complemented by rosé wines and red wines aged in wood from old Trollinger vines. Scharrenberg is classified as a single site within the Remstal-Stuttgart area, within the Großlage Weinsteige.
