Schafsteige

Location and Classification

Schafsteige is an officially designated single-vineyard site in the wine-growing region Württemberg. The designation is assigned, among other things, to the municipalities Weikersheim and Niederstetten.

Landscape and Geology

The documented vineyard area lies on south-facing slopes. From the vineyard landscape there are views over the Vorbach valley and the surrounding cultural landscape. Stone terraces in the site are described as expressions of the Muschelkalk formation.

Development of Viticulture

Viticulture associated with Schafsteige has already been documented for the year 1256. As part of a land consolidation, the vineyard area was newly laid out between 1962 and 1964 on 16 hectares.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

Tauberschwarz is documented as a traditional red grape variety of the vineyard landscape. Historically, the local wine tradition comprised red wines and Schiller wine; more recent plantings are predominantly with Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau and are associated with mostly white wines.
