Sankt Klausen

Location and Classification

Sankt Klausen is a single-vineyard site in Ramsthal in Bavaria, Germany, and lies to the east of the built-up area. The location belongs to the Frankens Saalestück area; as the municipality name, Ramsthal is given.

Terroir

The vineyard site comprises steep, south-facing areas. Further documented exposures range from south-east and south to south-west and west. The steep sites around Ramsthal, including Sankt Klausen, are associated with shell limestone soils. Landscape niches with heat accumulation shape the description of the site.

Grape Varieties and Wines

For the Ramsthaler Sankt Klausen, the white grape varieties Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Bacchus, Grauer Burgunder and Kerner have been documented. The red varieties include Domina, Schwarzriesling and Regent. Ramsthaler winemakers also grow Morio Muskat as a rare grape variety. Under the site name, among others, dry Silvaner, dry Grauer Burgunder, dry Weißer Burgunder, fruity-sweet Traminer, Rieslaner Auslese, as well as sparkling Silvaner and Riesling are offered.

Special Cultivation and Maturation

At the viewpoint, an educational vineyard preserves old grape varieties using traditional stake training; information boards explain the training system and the varieties. A documented Sankt Klausen Reserve Silvaner from the Neder winery matured for four years in Franconian oak casks. A Sankt Klausen Silvaner Brut Nature was produced using the traditional method without dosage.
