Sankt Georgen

Location and classification

Sankt Georgen is a legally defined single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Partenheim in the Bingen area and within the Großlage of Abtey in Rheinhessen. The vineyard area covers 55.5 hectares. The vineyards are located at around 185 to 240 metres above sea level and are oriented from east to south.

Soils

Löss over pararendzina, as well as limestone over rendzina, are documented. The loess formed as wind-blown dust containing lime, deposited during the ice ages. It creates deep, calcareous, loamy, water-retentive soils with good rootability. The limestone is described as a Tertiary marine deposit in connection with calcareous algal reef structures. The resulting rendzina soils are shallow to moderately deep, very calcareous, stony and sandy-loamy; they store less water available to plants and limit root penetration more strongly.

Wine style

Parcels on loess and pararendzina are associated with yellow-fruited aromas, as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. They show a moderate acidity, a medium-strong structure and an early approachable style. The limestone and rendzina parcels stand for citrus, apple and gooseberry, which can develop into mango and passion fruit. In addition, balanced acidity and mineral, chalky notes are present; the more structured style can feel closed off when young.

Historical name

For the year 1419, the wine-growing site is documented under the name Sankt Georgen Pfad. As early as the middle of the 14th century, a chapel dedicated to Saint George stood there.
