Rotgrund

Location and classification

Rotgrund is a legally registered single vineyard within Breisach am Rhein in the Baden wine-growing region. The single vineyard is listed in the Baden vineyards register; an official notice from 2023 assigned it specific parcels.

Landscape and climate

The wine-growing area lies at the Tuniberg, a low, flat hill ridge that rises about 120 metres above the southern Upper Rhine plain. The Tuniberg is characterised by limestone; the prevailing limestone soils are covered by layers of loess and clay. The municipality describes the climate in Breisach as mild, with numerous sunny days and an average annual rainfall of around 578 millimetres.

Grape varieties and wine style

For Rotgrund, wines made from Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Riesling and Merlot are documented. These include dry red and white wines; a named Rotgrund Spätburgunder is designated as a dry Qualitätswein.

Cultivation and vinification

For a documented Rotgrund wine, the vines are limited to a yield of 50 kilograms per are through green harvesting. The Rotgrund Spätburgunder is open-maceration fermented, prepared with juice removal, matured in barrique and then stored on fine lees. For Rotgrund selections, dry vinification, ageing in wood and reserve wines on full lees are documented; the stated reserve yield is 4,000 litres per hectare.

Historical and legal framework

Wine-growing on the Tuniberg in the area of Breisach am Rhein has been documented in writing since 1510. Official communications from 2026 also document the planned registration of the smaller geographical designations “Großstück and Grübler” as well as “Obere Halden” within the single vineyard Rotgrund.
