Roter Berg

Location and Classification

The Rote Berg is a vineyard site in the Württemberg region, managed by the VDP under the name “Roter Berg, Schozach”. Schozach is a district of Ilsfeld. The VDP lists the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with an area of 7.25 hectares. Riesling, Spätburgunder and Lemberger are permitted.

Topography, Climate and Soil

The site, oriented from south to south-west, lies at an altitude of 250 to 290 metres and has slope gradients of 10 to 35 percent. Thermal air currents ensure strong warming during the day and strong cooling at night. The VDP describes the soil as clayey Keuper with a fault zone of tuff, limestone and Muschelkalk.

Wines

The Roter Berg wines of the winery come from vines with strongly reduced yields on heavy clay loam soils with Muschelkalk. The Schozacher Roter Berg wines are classified under the winery’s three-star classification and are intended to develop over a longer period of time.

History

For Schozach, viticulture has been documented since 1396. In that year, Friedrich Sturmfeder received land there as a fief. According to the counts of Bentzel-Sturmfeder, the Schozacher Rote Berg came fully into the possession of the family in the 19th century.
