Roßstein

Location and classification

Roßstein is an officially registered single vineyard site in the municipality and in the cadastral district Kaub. It belongs to the wine-growing region Mittelrhein, to the Loreley area, and to the Großlage Herrenberg. In the official directory of wine-growing sites, it is listed under number 320408.

Terraces and geology

The site includes documented vineyard terraces and is described as a small-scale vineyard-terrace landscape. A south-facing slope area lies at about 250 to 280 metres above sea level. The subsoil consists of slate, which is partly overlain by humus.

Historical development

A historical landscape analysis recorded in 1991 that, in the traditional Kaub vineyard sites, only a few plots remained at Roßstein after land consolidation had shifted cultivation to other areas. From 1919 to 1923, Roßstein marked the southern boundary of the Free State Flaschenhals on the Rhine.
