Rosengründchen

Location and Classification

Rosengründchen is located in Meißen between Niederspaar and Oberspaar at the end of Spaargasse, below Roter Gasse and Kruspestraße. The single vineyard site belongs to the Meißen area and to the Großlage Spaargebirge.

Terroir and Terrain

The vineyard area described by the Weinbaugemeinschaft Meißen comprises 1.2 hectares. It has an average slope of 25 per cent and faces southeast. Steep and terraced areas are part of the site. The shallow soils consist of sandy weathering products over igneous rock, mainly granite and syenite. The soils are considered permeable and warm up quickly.

History and Cultivation

Before replanting, the site was an orchard with numerous wild roses. This is given as the origin of the name Rosengründchen. In 1934, the area was replanted with vines. Members of the Weinbaugemeinschaft Meißen cultivate plots there as hobby winemakers.

Varieties and Wines

The most important grape variety is Traminer. In addition, Goldriesling, Grauburgunder, Kerner and Spätburgunder are grown. With Rosengründchen, Traminer wines with a pronounced bouquet and, in particular, aromas of rose blossoms are associated. The Sächsische Winzergenossenschaft Meißen e.G. handles the pressing of the grapes from the vineyards cultivated by the Weinbaugemeinschaft and the sale of the wine.
