Location and classification
The Rosenberg, also Windesheimer Rosenberg, is a legally registered single vineyard in Windesheim in the winegrowing region Nahe in Rhineland-Palatinate. The vineyard site is oriented to the south-southeast and lies at a height of about 250 to 300 metres.
Climate and soils
Windesheim lies in the Guldenbachtal. The slopes of the Hunsrück protect the vineyards from harsh weather and stand for a mild, balanced climate with a long growing season. The Rosenberg is shaped by tertiary marine sand from the Mainz Basin, which formed around 25 million years ago. The soils consist of sand and gravel, including sandy loam as well as mixtures of sand and loam with gravel seams. In the sandy soils, fossil oysters are described.
Grape varieties and wine styles
In the Windesheimer Rosenberg, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc are planted. Documented are dry red wines from Spätburgunder as well as dry white wines from Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc.
Cultivation and vinification
For a Sauvignon Blanc plot, reduced vine pruning, the individual positioning and tying-in of the shoots, the removal of double shoots, and the manual removal of leaves from the inside of the trellis wall to improve ventilation are documented. The yield of this Sauvignon Blanc was stated as 55 hectolitres per hectare. In the cellar, selective hand harvesting took place, with 72 hours of must maceration time, daily rack-and-return with dry ice, controlled fermentation and maturation in stainless steel.
