Location and classification
Römerstich is an officially registered single-vineyard site in Auen in the Nahe winegrowing region. The vineyard site is assigned to the larger vineyard area Paradiesgarten.
Topography and soils
Documented parcels are located at around 280 to 330 metres above sea level. The slopes facing south have gradients of up to 60 per cent. The soils are made up of weathered sandstone and weathered slate; within the site there are also parcels with a higher proportion of clay and loam.
Grape varieties and cultivation
Riesling, Weissburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc grow in Römerstich. Riesling is planted on the steeper and poorer parcels, while Weissburgunder is planted on more clay- and loam-rich areas. A small Sauvignon Blanc parcel was established in 2011 on the highest knoll of the site. The climate is described as moderately continental. The higher-lying Sauvignon Blanc parcel ripens later; the adjacent woodland supports air circulation and the drying of the berries.
Wines and maturation
Römerstich is documented as a source for dry Riesling and Riesling Kabinett. A Sauvignon Blanc from the parcel is classified as German Quality Wine from the Nahe. The documented Riesling from the 2023 vintage was gently pressed after three to six hours of must maceration time, fermented spontaneously, and matured for more than twelve months on the lees in stainless steel and used wood. The Sauvignon Blanc was fermented spontaneously in two 500-litre tonneaux and then stored on full lees for eleven months.
