Römerkrug

Location and terrain

Römerkrug is a legally registered single-vineyard site in Oberwesel in the wine-growing region Mittelrhein. The site is assigned to the Oberwesel district of Dellhofen, lies in the UNESCO World Heritage site Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and is situated below the Schönburg.

Soil and cultivation

The vineyard is steep; for a documented Römerkrug plot, a slope of more than 50 per cent is given. The subsoil is predominantly slate with a small proportion of loam and is described as low in nutrients. A southern aspect ensures high levels of sunlight, while the slate stores warmth and releases it to the vines at night.

Vines and wines

For Römerkrug plots from OVID and Kellerei Zehn, Riesling is documented. The wines include dry Riesling from old vines, feinherb Riesling, Riesling Auslese, made in an elegantly sweet style, and Riesling Eiswein.

Farms and production

The OVID vineyard associated with Römerkrug comprises 1,650 vines, including vines more than 70 years old, and is cared for by hand throughout the year. The grapes are quickly taken to the winery, sorted, gently pressed, fermented in a stainless-steel tank with temperature control, and developed on fine lees for at least six months. Another Römerkrug plot is cultivated on 0.31 hectares with strongly growing American rootstocks. Kellerei Zehn was founded in 2017 after its founders leased an unused area in the site; its Riesling is fermented in a stainless-steel tank with support from the Goswin Lambrich estate.
