Location and Soil
The vineyard area Rappen lies in the Gewann Rappen on the municipal territory of Ilsfeld, on the L 1100 towards Flein, near the junction to the Engelsberghöfen. The municipality describes the site as elevated between Ilsfeld and Flein.
Plots and Management
For a documented plot group in the area of Vordere Rappen, an area of about 29 ares, a slope inclination of 3 per cent and the soil type stone-free Keuper gravel are identified. The areas are currently used as vineyards; following the approved soil infill works, further viticultural use is planned. For soil improvement, up to 20 centimetres of clean, loamy arable soil with approximately 400 to 480 cubic metres of material were proposed. The plots are located in a water protection area of Zone III.
Wines and History
With the site designation Ilsfelder Rappen, Sauvignon Blanc, Spätburgunder, Syrah and Riesling are documented. The wines include dry Sauvignon Blanc, dry Spätburgunder, dry Syrah and a sweet Sauvignon Gryn. Spätburgunder and Syrah are matured in barrique. The name Rappen is attested on a historical cadastral map of Ilsfeld from 1832; a local historical record also reports vineyard work in the area of Hinterer Rappen in the early 20th century.
