Location and classification
Ranzenberg refers to a wine-growing area north of Grantschen in the municipal area of Weinsberg. In the official designation list, the single site Ranzenberg Ellhofen is assigned and belongs to the Großlage Staufenberg in the area of Württembergisch Unterland of the wine-growing region Württemberg.
Site
Some of the vineyards cultivated by LVWO in Weinsberg, including Ranzenberg, have slope gradients of more than 40 per cent. The soils originate from calcareous Keuper and are predominantly described as deep and fertile. Climatically, Ranzenberg is considered a suitable site for Riesling.
Grape varieties and wines
In trials at Ranzenberg, White Riesling has been documented. In addition, a Ranzenberg wine from Weinsberg with Lemberger is recorded, which was vinified as a dry red wine.
Trial cultivation and management
A Riesling trial was planted in 1993 and switched to minimal pruning training in 2000. The trial worked with four metres of row spacing and 1.25 metres between vines; the harvest was carried out mechanically. For the Weinsberg LVWO vineyards, humus management, fertilisation tailored to requirements, controlled sown cover crops, intensive leaf work and biological or biotechnical pest control are documented. The soils are kept under permanent cover; herbicides are used only exceptionally and in a locally limited way.
