Pittersberg

Site and classification

Pittersberg is a vineyard site in Münster-Sarmsheim in the Nahe wine-growing region Nahe. The VDP lists the Münster-Sarmsheimer Pittersberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.

Topography and climate

The site, which is oriented to the south to the south-west, lies at around 100 to 200 metres above sea level and has a slope of 30 to 50 per cent. Pittersberg is considered protected as well as very warm and dry. The steep south-facing aspect promotes rapid warming, while the terrain forms in the east protect against cold westerly winds.

Soil and vines

The subsoil consists of slate, which is partly covered by a layer of loess. Descriptions cite grey Devonian slate and weathered slate material. The site is planted with Riesling; the vines are partly up to around 70 years old.

Wines and plots

Dry Rieslings from the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® classification have been documented. The plot area Im Pitterberg, located in the central part of Pittersberg, was planted in the 1960s with around 7,500 vines per hectare. For a Riesling from this plot, the grapes were gently pressed for ten hours and then fermented spontaneously in a neutral wooden barrel with a capacity of 1,200 litres. Pittersberg is also listed on a historic Nahe viticulture map from 1901.
