Location and classification
The Pilgerstein is a classified single vineyard in the district of Biebelnheim. It belongs to the large vineyard of Petersberg in the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen and extends on three sides around the village.
Soil and route
The vineyard is crossed by the Jakobsweg in the direction of the neighbouring Petersberg. The documented soil type is loess over pararendzina. The soils are calcareous, deep, loamy and well supplied with plant-available water; for the municipality they are particularly rich in lime.
Grape varieties and wine style
Pinot varieties are particularly well suited to the calcareous soils of the Pilgerstein. Documented are dry wines made from Spätburgunder and Weißburgunder. The local tradition of viticulture around the Pilgerstein historically placed a clear emphasis on red wine.
History
The Pilgerstein is first documented in 1555. The name is associated with the historical pilgrimage route through the vineyards; “Stein” denotes a resting place for pilgrims. A documented Pilgerstein Spätburgunder from the Schönhals winery ripens in small barrique casks.
