Location and classification
Pfaffenstein is a registered single vineyard in Niederhausen in the wine-growing region Nahe. The wine site directory of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate lists Pfaffenstein in the 2024 edition under the municipality of Niederhausen.
History and soils
The site was created during the land consolidation in 1970 as one of twelve single vineyards of Niederhausen. The soil is described as weathered material from porphyry, gravel and loess loam.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From Pfaffenstein, Rieslings are documented in dry and delicately off-dry styles, as well as Regent as a dry red wine. One Regent was matured in stainless steel, another vintage in barrique. For the Edelschliff 2024, about one third of the grapes came from Pfaffenstein; the grapes were harvested by the Mathern estate and vinified in the cellar in Niederhausen.
