Location and classification
Pfaffenmütze is a vineyard site in the district of Dittelsheim of Dittelsheim-Heßloch in Rheinhessen. It is classified as a single vineyard in the Wonnegau area and within the large vineyard area Pilgerpfad.
Name and soils
The name of the site refers to the shape of its plots. A calcareous clay marl Pelosol soil type has been documented, formed from clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea.
Soil characteristics
The Pelosol is deep, rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous. Its high proportion of swelling clay is associated with limited water permeability and aeration, medium heat-retaining capacity, as well as difficult conditions for rooting.
Documented wines
Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc are documented for Pfaffenmütze. A dry Silvaner from the 2014 vintage is documented, as well as a Dittelsheim Pfaffenmütze Sauvignon Blanc from the 2017 vintage.
