Pares

Location and orientation

Pares is a single vineyard in the Ober-Ingelheim district of Ingelheim am Rhein in Rheinhessen. It lies above Ober-Ingelheim on the Mainzer Berg on a slope facing south-west. The elevation ranges from 180 to 240 metres above sea level, and the maximum slope gradient is 10 per cent.

Soil and climate

The soil consists of stony loam with a high proportion of limestone, as well as Rendzina. The shallow to medium-depth, very limestone-rich and stony sandy loam profile has limited water storage available to plants, good aeration and good heat retention. Climatically, the site is shaped by the Rhine valley.

Grape varieties and wine style

Pares is documented as a red-wine site. Spätburgunder is the most important documented grape variety; Early Burgundy (Frühburgunder) is also named as a red grape variety suitable for the site.

History of the name

The name Pares is associated, among other things, with the Middle High German term “parit” for horse. In this context, an earlier use of the area as pasture land is mentioned.
