Location and relief
Paradies is a named wine-growing site in Radebeul in Saxony. It lies on the south-facing slopes of the Elbe valley and includes steep slopes as well as terraces on a slope oriented to the south. The altitude ranges from about 160 to 210 metres above sea level; the gradient is up to 60 degrees.
Climate and rock
The continental-influenced climate is characterised by warm days, cool nights and a long ripening period. The vines grow on syenite that has been weathered by volcanic activity.
Cultivation and grape varieties
The state-owned winery that farms Paradies cultivates around 4.5 hectares there. The site consists of steep-slope and terrace plots; the vines documented there are more than 25 years old. The grape varieties planted are Riesling and Traminer.
Name and classification under wine law
The name is connected with a historic mountain inn called Paradies dating from the mid-19th century. Paradies is listed officially as a single vineyard (Einzellage) for wine from the specific wine-growing region of Saxony, with Radebeul as the municipality.
Documented wine
The 2023 vintage is a fruit-sweet German Prädikatswein Kabinett made from Riesling and Traminer. The grapes, hand-picked together, produce a wine with 11.5% alcohol, 19.0 g/l residual sugar and 6.8 g/l acidity. It was processed gently, fermented for 60 days, and aged for seven months on fine lees in a stainless-steel tank.
