Location and classification
Palmenstein is an official single vineyard in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, the Bingen area, and is located in the district of Bingen am Rhein. The site belongs to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle; in the vineyard sites map it is listed as Palmenstein (Sponsheim).
Climate and soil
Rheinhessen is characterised by comparatively dry conditions, a high duration of sunshine, and mostly mild winters and autumns. The soil of Palmenstein is documented as sand-Rigosol: a deep, fertile, silty and calcareous loess sand with good water retention, aeration and root penetration.
Wine style
The terroir is associated with full-bodied, lush wines, buffered acidity, fruity aromas, medium structure and a lingering finish. White wines show notes of yellow fruit; red wines show fresh red fruit aromas such as strawberry and raspberry.
Origin of the name
The name goes back to an old boundary stone bearing the image of an open hand. The Latin word “palma” for a flat or open hand contributed to the name Palmenstein.
