Soil

Ölgild is characterised by marl and pararendzina. The soils consist of calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. Deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of spring clay, low permeability and aeration, as well as a high nutrient content are also described. In some parts, hillside marl, loess, sandy to clayey loam and pure clay occur.

Varieties and wine style

Pinot Blanc is documented for Ölgild. The soil conditions are associated with dense, full-bodied and expressive wines with balanced acidity. For white wines, juicy aromas of exotic fruit are described; for red wines, dark fruit and smoky spice. An earlier Ölzehnt or oil payment is considered a suggested explanation for the site name.
