Location
The Ölberg is a single vineyard site in the cadastral district of Wöllstein. It belongs to the Bingen sub-region in Rheinhessen, and to the Großlage Rheingrafenstein.
Soils
Part of the site consists of deep, calcareous, clayey-silty loam soils from loess and pararendzina. They provide a high store of plant-available water. In addition, shallow to medium-deep, stony sandy loam soils from volcanic rock occur; these are well aerated and contain comparatively few nutrients.
Volcanic rock and wine style
In the Ölberg quarry, rhyolite formations with locally column-like structures are exposed. The proportion of loess and pararendzina is associated with delicate fruit, moderate structure, freshness and mild acidity. The soils from volcanic rock stand for mineral, stony and smoky notes, lively freshness and pronounced acidity.
Historical name
The vineyard site has been documented since 1727. Its name is traced back to the site’s location by an old oil mill.
