Ölbaum

Location and classification

Olive tree is a legally designated single vineyard site in the Kraichgau area within the Großlage of Mannaberg. The site is assigned to the places Malsch, Malschenberg and Rettigheim. Malsch is located in the wine-growing region Baden.

Topography, climate and soils

The vineyards of the Malscher olive tree lie on exposed slopes of the Malscher Letzenberg, whose summit is given as 247 metres. Warm and dry conditions prevail there, with an early spring, warm summers with low rainfall, and mild autumns with warm days and cool nights.

The south-facing slopes of the Malscher Letzenberg have deep loess-clay soils with a high lime content and good water-retention capacity.

Grape varieties and wine styles

Among others, Spätburgunder, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Auxerrois, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay are documented in the Malscher olive tree. Dry white wines are bottled from Auxerrois, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay, as well as dry red wines from St. Laurent, Spätburgunder and Blaufränkisch.

Cultivation

Founded in 2001, the winery Kempf initially planted St. Laurent; its vineyards are located predominantly in the old Gewann Ölbaum. The grapes from these parcels are harvested by hand. For the Malscher olive tree, wide row spacings, sown and weed-grown (wild herbs) inter-row areas, and loosely trained leaf walls to improve air circulation are also documented.
