Oberer Berg

Two vineyard sites

Oberer Berg refers to two separately documented vineyard sites: one in Kleinbottwar within Steinheim an der Murr and one in Hoheneck within Ludwigsburg. The Kleinbottwar site belongs to the winegrowing region Württemberg.

Oberer Berg in Kleinbottwar

The Kleinbottwar Oberer Berg is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE and comprises 7.95 hectares. The slopes, oriented to the south to the southwest, lie at an altitude of 220 to 280 metres and show a gradient of 35 to 50 percent. The soils documented are Keuper and Muschelkalk.

As a classified grape variety, Lemberger is listed. The vineyard also includes Pinot Noir, Trollinger and Frühburgunder. Documented wines are dry Lemberger red wines. Depending on the wine, the mash fermentation, the biological acid reduction and the ageing in barrique were carried out; the ripening time stated is 20 to 24 months, as well as portions of new French oak or French and Austrian oak.

Oberer Berg in Hoheneck

The Hoheneck Oberer Berg is located in terraced steep slopes on the Neckar. The vineyards reach gradients of up to 72 percent. Fossil-rich Muschelkalk and the dry stone walls described as heat-storing structures shape the site. Viticulture in this area has been documented for centuries.

A vineyard taken over by Lauer and Röder in 2018 has vines that are almost 40 years old in a single-stem training system and is managed exclusively by hand. A municipal plot on the Oberer Berg was acquired in 1998 after several years without vines and is maintained by mowing once to twice a year in order to preserve grassland and marginal vegetation, and to control brambles, shrubs and Canadian goldenrod.
