Ludwigsburg

Location and wine landscape

Ludwigsburg is located in Baden-Württemberg on the Neckar and belongs to the Württemberg wine-growing region. Vineyards are found in the districts of Hoheneck, Neckarweihingen and Poppenweiler as well as in the surrounding landscapes along the river. The wine-growing landscape is characterised by steep, terraced slopes; a documented path runs through the steep sites between Neckarweihingen and Poppenweiler.

Upper Berg and natural environment

The Obere Berg lies in Hoheneck in the landscape protection area of the Neckar valley between Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck and the Marbach lock. The subsoil and the terrace walls there are connected with fossil-rich Muschelkalk. A disused vineyard area is maintained as terrace-related grassland and with its boundary vegetation by mowing once to twice per year.

Climate and cultivation

The terraced steep slopes were created through labor-intensive work over several centuries and continue to require manual labour. For a Ludwigsburg urban wine project, reduced yields and full manual labour are documented. The municipal weather station recorded an average temperature of 11.2 °C in 2025 and 649 mm of annual precipitation. The city’s climate analysis indicates increasing heat, increasingly drier summers, wetter winters and more frequent heavy rainfall events.

Wine and history

Ludwigsburg was founded at the beginning of the 18th century, while winegrowing on the Neckar slopes is older. The city wine Neckarheld is made from Trollinger grapes from the Ludwigsburg steep sites, developed dry, and matured for six months in barrique. For quality wine with a municipality or district designation, the wine-law requirements in Ludwigsburg apply regarding the natural minimum alcohol content for Kabinett as well as the provision to consumers before 15 December of the harvest year.
