Nüsseberg

Location and classification

Nüsseberg corresponds to the single vineyard Weischützer Nüssenberg in the Schloss Neuenburg area of the Qualitätsweinbau region Saale-Unstrut. The site comprises the cadastral areas of Weischütz, Müncheroda and Zscheiplitz; Müncheroda belongs to Gleina.

As of 31 December 2024, 56.6778 hectares were planted with vines.

Relief and soils

The Nüssenberg is a distinctive ridge that projects into the Unstrut valley. The vineyards, which face south-west, have slope gradients of around 10 to 40 percent. Vine growing is carried out in the lower slope areas, while the upper slopes are characterised by dry grassland and limestone quarry areas.

The soils consist of loamy and clay-rich weathering soils over shell limestone. In places, there are deeper loess-clay layers as well as stony limestone-weathering soils. The site is protected from west winds.

Grape varieties and wines

For the Weischützer Nüssenberg, among others, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Gutedel, Bacchus, Kerner, Spätburgunder and Dornfelder are documented. Further evidence relates to Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Traminer, Grauburgunder, Zweigelt, Kernling, Cabernet Mitos, Ortega and Frühburgunder.

The documented site wines include dry German Qualitätswein from Gutedel and dry German Prädikatswein Spätlese from Weißburgunder. Both wines were produced vegan; the Weißburgunder was bottled with natural corks.

Cultivation

A 0.35-hectare plot, previously left fallow, was planted in 2008 with 1,700 Frühburgunder vines. The cultivation includes cutting the vines throughout the year, tying and bending the shoots, repeated leaf trimming as well as extensive manual work on the steep slopes. Since the 1990s, harvesting has also been done by machine; Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese continue to be harvested by hand.

In viticulture, integrated plant protection is used, with regular checks of the vineyards and measures to combat disease.
