Location
Mühlberg is documented as a single-vineyard site of Unterschüpf, a district of Boxberg, in Baden-Tauberfranken. The vineyard site is around five kilometres from the Tauber.
Aspect and cultivation
The vineyards, which face south to south-east, receive good sunlight. Some plots have a slope of up to 40 per cent. Due to the steep areas, a large proportion of the work is carried out by hand. A community frost-protection sprinkling system is used to reduce damage caused by late frosts in spring.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Pinot Meunier are documented from Mühlberg. A Spätburgunder produced in 2020 is a dry red single-vineyard wine from Baden-Tauberfranken and is referred to as a German Qualitätswein. A Pinot Meunier produced in 2018 by Johann August Sack is a Brut Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine.
Maturing of the Spätburgunder
For the documented Mühlberg Spätburgunder, the grapes were selectively hand-harvested. The wine underwent seven days of cold maceration at 4 °C, fermentation with whole berries and a biological acid breakdown. It then matured for 22 months in barrique.
