Location and classification
The Mönchspfad is an officially registered single vineyard site in the district of Schornsheim. It belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Domherr in the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. The legally recorded vineyard area is 60.9 hectares.
Soils
Löss over pararendzina and marl over pararendzina have been documented. The löss is a calcareous aeolian sediment from the Ice Ages; from this a deep, calcareous, loamy silty soil developed, with good water storage capacity available to plants and good root penetrability. The marl consists of calcareous loams and sands of marine origin and is linked with a deep, strongly calcareous clay soil containing clay minerals that can swell.
Origin of the name
The name Mönchspfad is traced back to the site’s former ownership by a monastery.
Documented wines
From this site, dry white Qualitätswein from Cabernet Blanc, dry red Auslese from Merlot, and a Spätburgunder Réserve have been documented.
