Schornsheim

Location and history

Schornsheim is an Ortsgemeinde in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Wörrstadt. The municipality is located in the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. Schornsheim was first mentioned in 782 in a donation document from Charlemagne to the Abbey of Hersfeld.

Vineyard sites and soils

Schornsheim includes the individual vineyard sites Mönchspfad, Ritterberg and Sonnenhang. The south-facing Mönchspfad lies at about 150 to 180 metres, the Ritterberg at about 150 to 200 metres and the Sonnenhang at about 160 to 210 metres above sea level. All three sites are assigned to the area of Nierstein and the Großlage Domherr.

Historical designations

The name of the vineyard site Mönchspfad is traced back to earlier monastic ownership. The Ritterberg is documented in 1422 as “über den riderberg” and in 1483 as “uff dem rodirberg”; the regional description links the historical name with a possible knight’s manor or cleared land. In Mönchspfad, Löss-Pararendzina and Mergel-Pararendzina occur. Ritterberg and Sonnenhang have been mapped with Löss-Pararendzina. The Löss is described as a calcareous wind sediment from the Ice Age, and the marl as a calcareous tertiary marine deposit.
