Mittelhölle

Location and classification

Mittelhölle, also Johannisberger Mittelhölle, is located in the Johannisberg district of the town of Geisenheim in the Rheingau. The name refers to the middle section of the slope. In the Hessian viticulture area register, the site is assigned as a single vineyard within the Großlage of Johannisberg and the cadastral district of Johannisberg.

Soil and area

The soils consist of loess clay with gravel and stones. The vineyard area is given as 6.5 hectares.

Grape variety and wine style

For Johannisberger Mittelhölle, Riesling is documented, including in wines from the wineries G. H. von Mumm and Sonneck. The site is described as producing finely fruited wines with a piquant acidity. Bottle or cellar ageing is recommended before the aromas fully develop.

Historical and viticultural context

In the past, a plot in Johannisberger Mittelhölle was reserved exclusively for Schloss Johannisberg. For the holdings of the winery Sonneck, to which a plot in the site belonged, plant protection and fertilisation were limited to what was considered necessary; the age of the vines was given as an average of 35 to 40 years. The wines from the Johannisberg holdings, including Johannisberger Mittelhölle, were matured in stainless steel and fermented with temperature control.
