Location and climate
Geisenheim is located in the Rheingau directly on the Rhine and is surrounded by vineyards. The town lies between the Rhine and the Taunus; the municipal area also includes Johannisberg, Marienthal and Stephanshausen. Johannisberg is situated at a higher elevation, Stephanshausen at a higher level.
The Rheingau is characterised by mild winters and warm summers. For the period 1991 to 2020, Geisenheim recorded an average of 527 millimetres of annual precipitation, 1,701 hours of sunshine and a mean annual temperature of 11.0 degrees Celsius. During the growing season, the averages were 324 millimetres of precipitation, 1,343 hours of sunshine and 15.7 degrees Celsius.
Viticulture and grape varieties
The wine-growing region has a variety of soils, including limestone, sand, gravel, loam, loess, quartzite and slate. The city’s history has resulted in seven vineyard sites in Geisenheim itself and eight further ones in the district of Johannisberg.
Historically, White Riesling is the most important grape variety in Geisenheim and in the Rheingau. In 2025, in the Rheingau 75.36 per cent of the vineyard area accounted for White Riesling and 12.48 per cent for Blue Spätburgunder. Riesling from the Rheingau benefits from a long ripening period and is associated with fine acidity and delicate aromas; Geisenheim Riesling is described as fresh, clearly acidity-focused and suitable for long ageing.
Historical development
Geisenheim was first mentioned in 772 as “Gisenheim”. In the same document, the earliest documented name for the Rheingau appears as “Rinechgowe”. In 1864, Geisenheim was granted town rights by the Duke of Nassau.
In 1775, a late harvest was documented at the district of Johannisberg on Schloss Johannisberg. This event is connected to the historical development of the Spätlese.
Research and teaching
In 1872, the Prussian teaching institute for fruit growing and viticulture was founded in Geisenheim. From it, in 2013, Geisenheim University emerged. Its vineyards are used for long-term trials with yield-capable grape varieties and for the development of new vine breeding.
