Location and Soil
The Michaelsberg is located in Bamberg, on the south-facing slope of the former St. Michael monastery complex. The sunny vineyard, oriented to the south, is planted on regional Keuper soil, which is also described as sandy.
History and Cultivation
Wine-growing at the Cameraden vineyard on the south slope of the monastery complex has been documented since the 12th century. After around 200 years without Silvaner vines, the vineyard was replanted; the first harvest from the restored site took place in 2011.
The area, about 0.86 hectares in size, was restored from 2009 in preparation for the 2012 State Garden Show. To supply the young vines as dryness increased, a modern drip irrigation system was installed. On behalf of the Bürgerspitalstiftung Bamberg, the vineyard is managed by a regional winemaker.
Varietal and Wines
Silvaner is planted in the vineyard. The documented Silvaner Classic is dry, finely mineral and fruit-driven; the 2023 vintage has 12.0 percent alcohol.
Since the 2023 vintage, a Silvaner Selection has also been produced. It is dry and structured; the stated 2024 vintage has 13.0 percent alcohol. The maturation takes place in Barriques made from Franconian oak.
