Maustal

Location and Classification

The Maustal is a named vineyard site south of Sulzfeld am Main in the wine-growing region Franconia. The slopes located along the Main form a large amphitheatre. In the Bavarian vineyard site directory, the individual site is listed under Sulzfeld am Main, and the greater site is listed as Kitzinger Hofrat.

Topography and Soil

The slopes facing south-southeast to southeast are steep; the part classified as a VDP site reaches slopes of up to 60 percent and lies at an altitude of about 190 to 235 metres. Its soil consists of poor, stony-rich Upper Muschelkalk, also referred to as Triassic Muschelkalk.

Area and Grape Varieties

The VDP-classified area comprises 4.74 hectares, while the broader individual site in the Bavarian vineyard site directory is given as 60 hectares. In the classified part, Silvaner, Riesling and Pinot Noir are grown. For the larger site, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner, Traminer, Domina and Dornfelder are also documented.

Wines and History

Maustal is designated by the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) as VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Tenhof Theo Luckert documents VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from Riesling and Pinot Noir. In 1963, the family planted the first Silvaner vines in their Maustal parcel and continues to cultivate them to this day.
