Location and classification
The Marmorberg is an officially recognised single vineyard site in the municipal and cadastral area of Braubach in Germany. It belongs to the Großlage Marksburg in the Loreley area of the Qualitätsweinbaugebiet Mittelrhein. In the official register of wine-growing sites, the site carries the number 320601; its registered vineyard area covers less than one hectare.
Topography and grape varieties
The Marmorberg is farmed as a steep hillside vineyard. The local vineyard soil is described as slate (ton schist) and quartzite. In a documented vineyard holding at the Braubach Marmorberg, Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) grow. Of 1,084 vines, 642 are Riesling and 442 are Spätburgunder, corresponding to around 69 and 31 percent respectively.
Cultivation and vinification
The documented vineyard holding has been farmed since 2013. The vines are tended by hand and using traditional methods; according to the operator, modern equipment is not used. The grapes are processed in the estate’s own cellar, and the wines are filled by hand.
Spätburgunder as Weißherbst
The documented Spätburgunder from the Marmorberg is vinified as Weißherbst. For this, the grapes are pressed before fermentation, so that a slightly rosé-coloured variety-pure wine is produced.
