Location and Classification
The Mandelberg is a single vineyard within the large vineyard of Adelberg, in the Bingen area, in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard is located within the municipal area of Lonsheim and covers 58 hectares. It lies at approximately 180 to 230 metres above sea level and has an exposure ranging from west to south.
Soil
The soil consists of deep, calcareous clayey soil of the Mergel/Pelosol type. It was formed from calcareous, clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary Sea. The nutrient-rich, strongly calcareous soil has a high proportion of clay capable of swelling, limited water and air permeability, a medium warming potential, and difficult root penetration.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
For the Mandelberg, among others, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Dorsa and Pinot Meunier are documented. In addition, a documented Riesling originates from the southwest-facing Lonsheim Mandelberg. The wines from the marl-/Pelosol soils are associated with a full-bodied, dense and rich profile, moderate acidity, a creamy texture, ripe fruit and comparatively less minerality.
Documented Riesling Vinification
For a Riesling from the Lonsheim Mandelberg, moderate yields and a negative selection in the vineyard are given. The vinification is carried out 100 per cent in stainless steel, with gentle ageing on fine lees as well as a combination of spontaneous and selected (pure culture) yeasts.
