Langer Berg

Location and Viticulture

The Langer Berg vineyard, legally known as “Schliebener Langer Berg”, is located in Schlieben in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg. It extends along the south-facing slope of the Langer Berg over about one hectare. The vines grow on terraces running across the slope. The soil consists of sands from the Ice Age with loess.

Grape Varieties and Wines

The early-ripening grape varieties Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Regent are grown. The grapes are processed into dry or semi-dry wines. A documented Schieler is a red blend made from white Müller-Thurgau and red Regent grapes.

History and Preservation

Viticulture in Schlieben has been documented since the 13th century, later declined and ended at the beginning of the 20th century. The town of Schlieben began in 1992 with the replanting of an old vineyard area on the Langer Berg. Since 1993, the vineyard has been cared for by the association for the promotion of historical viticulture in Schlieben as a living natural monument.

Wine Law and Cellar

Schliebener Langer Berg is one of two legally approved wine-growing regions in Brandenburg for the production of Qualitätswein and is, under wine law, part of the Elstertal area within the Qualitätsweingebiet Sachsen. The association is a member of the Meißen wine cooperative, where the grapes are pressed and processed separately. From about 1540, more than 30 historical wine cellars were dug into the Langer Berg, which were used for storing wine and ice.
