Schlieben

Location and Climate

Schlieben is a town in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg. The Schliebener basin has a continental inland climate in eastern Germany, with warm summers, longer stretches of good weather and cold winters.

The Langer Berg Vineyard

The Langer Berg lies on a terraced south-facing slope on sands from the Ice Age with portions of loess. The documented area under vine amounts to 0.860 hectares. The vineyard is preserved as a living natural monument and is cultivated on a voluntary basis by the association for the promotion of historical viticulture in Schlieben e.V.

History of Viticulture

Viticulture in Schlieben has been documented since the 12th or 13th century. For economic reasons it came to a halt in the early 20th century; exhaustion of the soil and powdery mildew also contributed to the decline. In 1992, the town and residents replanted an approximately one-hectare former vineyard area on the south-facing slope of the Langer Berg. The historic wine-growing association was founded in 1993; the first documented harvest followed in 1994, and the first quality wine from Schlieben was produced in 1995.

Legal Classification and Wines

The Schliebener Langer Berg is one of two legally approved wine-growing areas in Brandenburg for the production of quality wine. Legally, it belongs to the Elstertal area in the wine-growing region of Saxony. Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Regent are grown. The wines are matured dry or semi-dry; in addition, the association documents the Schieler as a redling made from Müller-Thurgau and Regent. Separate pressing takes place at the Meißen wine cooperative.
