Location and classification
Küchenmeister is a vineyard site in Rödelsee in the Franconian winegrowing region. It belongs to the Schwanberger Land winegrowing area and is assigned to the Großlage Schloßberg in the Kitzingen district. The classified area comprises 46.00 hectares.
Topography and soils
The slopes, which are oriented from the south-west to the west-south-west, lie at about 240 to 380 metres above sea level and have gradients of approximately 20 to 50 percent. They extend from the edge of Rödelsee towards Schwanberg and to the boundary of Iphofen. The soils consist of Gipskeuper and Mittlerer Keuper; locally, they are described as deep, mineral-rich Keuper soils.
Climate and wines
The open situation to the south-west is protected from cold north-east winds by the Schwanberg and the slopes of the Steigerwald. Around Rödelsee, roughly 300 to 500 millimetres of precipitation fall each year, mostly in winter. The wines from the Rödelsee sites, including Küchenmeister, are described as fruity and strongly mineral, and can be stored for a long time. For this site, Silvaner, Riesling, Weißer Burgunder, Rieslaner, Scheurebe, Sauvignon Blanc and Spätburgunder are classified.
Name and classification
The name Küchenmeister has been documented since 1360 and refers to the Küchenmeister family of Nordenberg, which owned property in Rödelsee. The site remained in place during the reorganisation of the former Rödelsee vineyard sites and, after the delimitation in 1971, was one of two designated single vineyards. The VDP lists Rödelseer Küchenmeister as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; this is a VDP classification and not a statutory German designation under wine law.
